Kelp Resources
The benefits of kelp are quite extensive.
Healthy Bones, Nails, and Teeth
Compared with dairy products, seaweed provides up to ten times more calcium and iron by weight. This helps bones, nails, and teeth become stronger.
Strengthening the Circulatory System
- Seaweed has traditionally been eaten by Asian cultures to strengthen the circulatory system and help lower cholesterol.
- Research studies show that kelp may help fight heart disease and hypertension.
- It also may bind with fecal bulk to help eliminate toxins safely. It is also said to lower blood cholesterol and prevent ulcers by fighting bacteria.
- It is also said to reduce obesity through stimulating the thyroid gland.
Cancer Fighting
Research studies have shown that of all the seaweeds, it is the species Laminaria that may offer cancer-fighting benefits. The low-cancer rate in Japan has been linked to diet and Laminaria, which is used to make soup stock for miso, a Japanese soup usually eaten twice a day. Laminaria may also help those in radiation therapy.
Laminaria kelp also attracts toxins to it, which are then eliminated when the fibrous part of kelp is flushed out of the body.
Some have also attributed weight loss, relief from asthma, thyroid and glandular problems, slowing of the aging process, reduction in cholesterol levels, and help with menopause to Laminaria kelp.
It is said to be an excellent general health tonic, as well as improve and strengthen the condition of skin and hair.
Providing Omega-3 Oils
Omega-3 and the lesser-known Omega-6 oil are essential nutrients, vital to a healthy body. They contain essential fatty acids (EFAs). Fatty acids are needed for cell membrane formation, metabolism of cholesterol, energy production for cells, and lowering blood pressure. Linoleic Acid and Gamma Linolenic Acid are two well-known fatty acids.
Essential fatty acids may also play a role in reducing the risks of heart disease and strokes. Studies have shown that EFAs may help increase blood flow to the brain and heart. A healthy flow of blood lessens the chance of blood clots and other complications. Omega-3 and 6 oils also help build up the immune system.
In Japan, where Omega-3 oils are eaten in the form of seafood or fish as a regular part of the diet, the number of people with coronary heart disease is extremely low. In North America, where the average intake of Omega-3 oils is very low, coronary heart disease affects many people.
Fish oil is well-known as a source of Omega-3 oil. However, fish cannot manufacture this oil on their own. They get this oil from sea vegetables, like kelp.
It is important to note that certain species of kelp, like that used in MegakelpTM Omega Kelp Classic and Omega Kelp Premium, contain stronger concentrations of Omega-3 oils.
Lesser Known Nutrients
In Jean Carper's well-known book on nutrition The Food Pharmacy, she rates kelp as a "pharmaceutical miracle." She lists fucoidan, melatonin, and phytoestrogens as key nutrients in kelp. Although these nutrients are not well-known, they are vital for health.
Like the discovery of penicillin in the 1940's that brought about a revolution in health care with the identification of the importance of fungi and molds, some believe the nutritional and healing properties of food sources such as kelp may lead the next health revolution.
