Here are some frequently asked questions answered by Jaye Hoseason, President and Founder of MegakelpTM.
Q. Are there any additives or fillers in your product? A. Kelp Nutritional Supplements do not contain any additives or fillers. They are made from pure kelp.
Q. Do you use gel capsules or vegi capsules? A. We use gel capsules for our supplements. We currently do not have enough of a demand for our supplements in vegi-cap form. If required, we can produce them in vegi-cap form by hand and there would be an extra charge for this service. To inquire about pricing for this, please email us at info@kelpnutritionalsupplements.com.
Q. How much iodine does your product contain? A. Each kelp capsule contains 150mcg of natural iodine. Because the iodine comes from a natural source, you body will absorb what it requires and eliminate the excess.
Q. We have heard that kelp makes your hair grow thicker, is this true and if so how much quicker does it grow?
A. We don’t have any scientific proof, but my husband was balding prior to taking kelp and now, much to his delight, he has hair growth where there was none!
Q. I would like to know how kelp works in the aid of losing weight and how much should be taken?
A. To quote Dr. Earl Mindell’s Vitamin Bible, p.156 re: Kelp. "Because of the natural iodine content, kelp has a normalizing effect on the thyroid gland. In other words, thin people with thyroid trouble can gain weight by using kelp, and obese people can lose weight with it.” We do not specifically recommend our nutritional supplements for weight loss. However, some customers have noted weight loss over the course of time as a benefit of taking our kelp nutritional supplements.
Q. I am now taking Synthroid for Hypothyroidism, I wanted to know if it would be all right to take kelp to increase my well being, or should I just take the Synthroid?
A. Since your Doctor prescribed Synthroid, we suggest you consult with him about your intention to add kelp to your diet. By taking a kelp based nutritional supplement, you may need less prescription medicine than you think. Reference: Dr. Earl Mindell’s "Vitamin Bible" bottom p. 310.
Q. I am 57 years of age. Two years ago I had four-way bypass heart surgery, with a sound heart as doctors told me. I would like to reduce my fatigue and profuse perspiration while exerting myself. My blood pressure is moderately high and I take medication for this condition as well as for my Hypothyroidism (Synthroid). I want to exercise a bit more, but safely. I believe the blood pressure medication tires me. Would MegakelpTM with the Omega help me to free myself from these meds and their side effects?
A. “Modern science confirms that kelp is one of nature’s all-around pharmaceutical miracles, full of chemicals that can accomplish everything from warding off and treating several types of cancer, lowering blood cholesterol and blood pressure, thinning the blood, preventing ulcers, killing bacteria and even curing constipation.” Reference: Jean Carper’s "The Food Pharmacy".
We cannot recommend that our nutritional supplements replace any medication prescribed by your doctor. However, by taking kelp nutritional supplements you may be able to reduce the amount of your Synthroid medication. You should discuss this with your doctor.
Q. I’ve been diagnosed with COPD (congested origin pulmonary disease) and told to take 1500mg of kelp per day to see if it would rid my lungs of congestion?
A. My husband and I have been taking the combination of Omega Premium (high in Omega 3 & 6 oils for circulation) and Laminaria (assists in eliminating toxins) 3-times daily for over 6 years now. We both enjoy clearer lungs and sinuses. We have not had a cold or flu since taking kelp on a regular basis, enjoy good circulation and are in excellent health. Kelp contains all the minerals and vitamins necessary for daily health. Having said that, remember that the effects of any nutritional supplement will vary from individual to individual.
Q. Trying to find out if someone is allergic to shellfish can they still take products with kelp in them?
A. I, myself am allergic to scallops, even the smell of it cooking upsets my stomach. And, my husband is allergic to lobster, but we’ve taken our Megakelp™ capsules 3-times daily for over six years without any side effects whatsoever.
Q. I am a pregnant and bought a kelp vitamin today from my organic store. It says as with all other products, if you are pregnant or nursing consult your doctor. I am not high risk and very healthy and my doctors only support FDA approved drugs, so they have no say on this issue. Is it safe to take the kelp vitamins?
A. The following is a reference from Dr. Earl Mindell’s "Vitamin Bible" regarding iodine:
“RDA as established by the Natural Research Council – 75 to 200 mg for pregnant and lactating women respectively.
Best Natural Source: Includes kelp
Supplements: Natural kelp is a good source of supplemental iodine.
Toxicity: No known toxicity from natural iodine, though iodine, as a drug can be harmful if prescribed incorrectly.”
Q. How much sodium is in kelp supplements? The Doctor is suggesting lithium for a family member as an adjunct to anti-depressant therapy. My understanding is lithium is basically sodium and I would much prefer to give sodium from a natural source.
A. Sodium in kelp is 0.8% of dry weight as opposed to 40% in table salt. Kelp gets its saltiness from not only sodium but also potassium and other important elements.
Q. How long should you take kelp? Are there any dangers to using it daily? My mother is 82 with a thyroid condition, in just a few short weeks she has already noticed a difference, but of course, she is leery to take it too long? Any comments would be appreciated to reassure her.
A. I cannot attest to other kelps but my husband and I personally have been taking our Megakelp™ kelp nutritional supplements for over six years, 3 times daily with excellent results. The rare kelps used in our Megakelp™ products are harvested by a Marine Biologist/Botanist with over 30 years experience. It helps to ease one’s mind knowing the source of something we are ingesting into our bodies. Incidentally, my husband is 86.
Q. I have been researching a lady friend’s problem around radiation poisoning of her thyroid via excessive x-rays. In my research I have run across several reference of sea greens (seaweed) as being able to toss off radiation from the human body. I am wondering if you have knowledge of this and if so can you point me in the right direction either in terms of product or information? I am not sure if all seaweeds might do this or only a specific one. Can you help me please?
A. Please check out our Spotlight on Nutrition article, “Your Thyroid Depends On It" as it is an excellent reference regarding the thyroid.
Also, our customers who use our products during and after radiation treatments report fewer or no side effects from using our Omega Premium/Laminaria kelp combination. The Laminaria kelp, contains a substance that selectively combines with radioactive strontium and helps eliminate it naturally from the body (Canadian Medical Association Journal) while the Omega Premium kelp, high in Omega 3 and 6 oils helps to strengthen the immune system and improve blood flow to the heart and brain.
Q. Does kelp contain any carbohydrates?
A. Kelp has no digestable carbohydrate.
Q. Can kelp help with goiter?
A. Megakelp supplements are high in natural iodine. To assist in controlling goiter we would recommend the Omega Premium kelp. Please keep in mind that results may vary from individual to individual. Also, please consult with your doctor to determine the cause of the goiter to make sure it is due to an iodine deficiency (not a symptom of another underlying disease).
We recommend the Omega Premium combo for maximum health benefits. The Omega Premium kelp is a great source of iodine and the Laminaria kelp aids in removing toxins from your body.
Q. I read that kelp contains arsenic. Is it still safe to take?
A. Kelp does contain arsenic but it is an organic form of arsenic. And, the organic form is thought not to be harmful. The reference for this comes from the following excerpt:
"Arsenic in kelp that is organically bound is thought not to be harmful to humans. The idea is that this form of arsenic is not digested but passed through the body.
